With only two locations in Portland and LA, Salt & Straw is a hot (or cold?) commodity, with lines around the block even in 30 degree weather in the middle of the winter night.
The ice cream shop itself is not very big, located on NW 23rd Ave.
They also sell cute knick-knacks, ice cream by the pint, and coffees and pastries.
Salt & Straw, in honor of Thanksgiving, created 5 Thanksgiving specific flavors, offered only until Thanksgiving Day. These flavors include:
Sweet Potato Casserole with Maple Pecan
Buttered Mashed Potatoes and Gravy
Spiced Goat Cheese and Pumpkin Pie
Salted Caramel Thanksgiving Turkey
Apple and Cranberry Stuffing
After trying all of these flavors and a few of their classic flavors such as Strawberry Balsamic, Stumptown Coffee, and Sea Salt Caramel, I got a scoop of the Salted Caramel Thanksgiving Turkey, which didn’t actually taste like turkey, but more of a vanilla with salty caramel ribbons.
The Spiced Goat Cheese Pumpkin Pie was also tasty and the Sweet Potato Casserole with Maple Pecan was my friend and I’s all time favorite. We couldn’t resist getting a pint of it to take home!
Salt & Straw, starting December, has a whole new array of flavors for Christmas, such as Peppermint Cocoa and Spiked Butterscotch Eggnog. If you’re in Portland or LA, Salt & Straw is a must – no matter the temperature outside!
