Blue Star Donuts

For a city that’s known for it’s food – coffee and donuts – it’s easy to get caught up in the tourist attractions. As far as donuts go, Voodoo Doughnuts is easily Portland’s most famous donut joint, and is populated by tourists at all times of the day. However, while their donuts are crazy and quirky, they are enjoyed more for the novelty of them and not as much for taste.

At Blue Star, although the donuts don’t have blue cream fillings and Froot Loop toppings, the taste and quality are MUCH better. The flavors are still unique and colorful – the donuts range from Chocolate Ganache to Pumpkin Cheesecake, Passion Fruit to Cinnamon Sugar.

The donuts, while they are sweet, don’t feel like a sugary overload like Voodoo Doughnuts. The dough is more dense, like that of an Old Fashioned Donut, and while the colors of some of the icing may look a bit unnatural, the sweetness is not overpowering and the unique flavors of each donut are very distinct.

They have bacon donuts and powdered sugar donuts, as well as Tiramisu Cake donuts and various fruity flavors. Each of the donuts is vastly different from the rest and feature flavors that venture away from the classic Chocolate Glazed or Maple Bar.

We got a small box with 4 different donuts – Blueberry Bourbon Basil, Tiramisu Cake, Blueberry, and Orange Olive Oil. My favorite was the Blueberry Bourbon Basil – each of the flavors stood out and it created an interesting twist of sweet flavors.

Blue Star definitely has better quality donuts than Voodoo, although may not share the same fun of eating outrageous looking donuts with funky flavors. These donuts are definitely worth getting while in Portland, and have even expanded to LA!
